CE mark awarded to iThera Medical’s MSOT Acuity Echo – a major project milestone
“We are very excited about the CE certification of our MSOT Acuity Echo system. The integration of ultrasound imaging is key for clinical users of optoacoustics” said Christian Wiest, CEO and co-founder of iThera Medical. Dr Philipp Bell, Chief Commercial Officer at iThera and Coordinator of EUPHORIA said “Obtaining the CE mark is a major milestone for the EUPHORIA project. We see huge potential for the MSOT Acuity Echo and the opportunity for non-invasive patient imaging that it presents”.
MSOT (multispectral optoacoustic tomography), based on the photoacoustic effect (the emission of acoustic signals following light absorption) has the unique capability to visualize optical contrast at high resolution, in deep tissue in real-time. By tuning the wavelength of the excitation laser, it can discriminate tissue chromophores that have a characteristic spectrum in the near-infrared; particularly haemoglobin, lipids, collagen, and water. The combination of optoacoustic imaging with ultrasound allows the clinician to identify relevant anatomical structures based on the ultrasound image and then probe the tissue of interest for functional and molecular biomarkers using MSOT.
The technology behind iThera’s MSOT Acuity Echo was optimized as part of the EUPHORIA Project. We aim to test the efficacy of the new system as a clinical tool for non-invasive monitoring of Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. A multi-site clinical study in people with IBD is currently underway in four hospitals in Germany and Italy.
EUPHORIA presented by iThera Medical’s Tim Devling at Tel-Aviv U IBD Research Seminar
Tim Devling, Director of Sales and Applications at iThera Medical gave a talk entitled “Latest Advances in Clinical Imaging of Crohn’s Disease” on Wednesday, May 19th, 2021, International IBD Awareness Day at The 2nd Tel-Aviv University Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Research Seminar. Tim’s talk highlighted the EUPHORIA Project and the latest MSOT technological advances.
The online meeting attracted a mix of sixty clinicians and academic researchers. See the meeting programme here.
Partners Pintail Limited feature EUPHORIA on World IBD Day
“A new dawn of inflammatory bowel imaging technologies is on the horizon!” is how our partners at Pintail Limited have described EUPHORIA in a May 19th, 2021, story on their website. To acknowledge World IBD Day, they shared the good news that “new non-invasive inflammatory bowel imaging technologies are trialling through the Horizon 2020-funded ‘EUPHORIA’ project led by iThera Medical GmbH”.

EUPHORIA clinical study presented to Munich Rotary Club members
EUPHORIA Clinical Trial Manager Deborah-Ann Schuster of iThera Medical delivered an online lecture on Tuesday, April 27th, 2021 at 7 PM to the members of the Rotary Club. Approximately twenty people attended Deborah-Ann’s talk that was entitled, “EUPHORIA – die klinische Studie von iThera Medical um chronisch-entzündliche Darmerkrankungen besser zu behandeln”, or “EUPHORIA – iThera Medical’s clinical study to better treat inflammatory bowel disease.”
EUPHORIA clinical study receives Regulatory Approval in Italy
The EUPHORIA team at iThera Medical, sponsors of the EUPHORIA clinical study are pleased to announce that they have obtained full regulatory approval for the study in Italy. Currently, they are preparing the initiation of the Italian sites, and expect to open both Milan and Rome in June 2021.

Optoacoustic imaging for inflammatory bowel disease webinar available for viewing
In case you missed it, the iThera Medical-hosted March webinar ‘Optoacoustic imaging in inflammatory bowel disease” featuring Prof Dr med. Maximillian Waldner of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg can be viewed here:
iThera hosts EUPHORIA Webinar: Optoacoustic imaging in inflammatory bowel disease
On Thursday, March 4, 2021 (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM GMT), iThera Medical is hosting a webinar ‘Optoacoustic imaging in inflammatory bowel disease.’ Here, Prof. Dr med. Maximilian Waldner, Professor of Functional Imaging in Medicine at the Erlangen University Hospital, will outline his work in the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) field and the use of MSOT as an emerging modality for non-invasive IBD imaging as well as introduce the first multi-centre clinical trial, EUPHORIA.
IBD is typically diagnosed and monitored using colonoscopy which poses significant patient discomfort and the risk of complications. A new alternative to this is Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT), an imaging technology that enables the rapid, non-invasive and quantitative monitoring of IBD.
Topics to be covered include:
- An overview of the current methods for diagnosing and monitoring IBD
- Description of clinical research evaluating the potential of MSOT for imaging IBD
- An outlook for MSOT towards the routine examination and monitoring of IBD
