iThera leads €1.9m research project to advance optoacoustic imaging technology towards AI-supported quantitative medical diagnosis

September 13th, 2021|

iThera MedicalEUPHORIA Coordinators, iThera Medical GmbH has received grant funding from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy to conduct a Euro 1.9 million R&D project to develop next-generation AI-supported electronics for its MSOT imaging systems for inflammatory bowel disease. The Bavarian state-funded technology innovation project, DeepOPUS, launched today, September 13th, 2021, aims to augment iThera’s proprietary optoacoustic imaging technology using AI technology, developing it into a quantitative diagnostic method for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and beyond. Stefan Morscher, the project leader of DeepOPUS and VP of Software Development at iThera Medical: ‘We are extremely excited to lift clinical diagnostics to a new level through the introduction of groundbreaking AI technology in an MSOT device. This will make the technology applicable to a wider patient population.’

This is an important next step to further translate the groundbreaking MSOT technology from research use to clinical routine. Read the full press release here.

The DeepOPUS project is funded through the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie) under grant agreement No DIE-2106-0004 // DIE0161/01.

EUPHORIA CE mark announcement featured by CORDIS

July 1st, 2021|

The Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS), the European Commission’s primary source of results from the projects funded by the EU’s framework programmes for research and innovation featured EUPHORIA news on June 23rd, 2021. The mission of CORDIS is to bring research results to professionals in the field to foster open science, create innovative products and services and stimulate growth across Europe.

The CORDIS announcement reads: “German medical technology manufacturer iThera Medical’s imaging system has been awarded a CE mark, confirming that the product conforms with European health, safety and environmental protection standards. The system in question uses a new imaging modality named multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT). As such, it’s called the MSOT Acuity Echo. The non-invasive MSOT Acuity Echo device combines lasers and ultrasound and has the potential to provide better monitoring of IBD than current imaging systems. The device’s journey to CE certification was supported by the EU-funded EUPHORIA project that has focused on optimising the technology and testing the device as a clinical tool for non-invasively monitoring IBD.”
